Freedom House rated Mauritius as “free” in 2023, scoring 89/100, highlighting strong protections for freedoms of speech, press, and assembly.

Mauritius operates as a parliamentary representative democratic republic with the President as the head of state and the Prime Minister as the head of government. The National Assembly, elected every five years, consists of 70 members.
