2. VOLCANIC ORIGINS
The volcanic origin of Mauritius has significantly shaped its landscape, contributing to its allure. The volcanic activity that formed the island created a varied and dramatic topography, including rugged mountains, deep gorges, lush valleys, and numerous waterfalls. These features offer breathtaking vistas and opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, exploration, and water sports. The rich volcanic soils support diverse agriculture, with crops such as sugarcane, tea, and tropical fruits thriving here.
Unique geological features, such as the Chamarel Seven Colored Earths and volcanic craters, are major tourist attractions, enhancing the island’s tourism appeal. Every landscape is a volcanic experience. Yes, Mauritius is the best island.
1. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION
Mauritius, with an area of only 2,000 km², located on the Capricorn line in the Indian Ocean, benefits greatly from its strategic position. Approximately 230 kilometers from Reunion Island and about 2,000 kilometers from Africa, its isolation offers several key advantages. The remote location naturally controls its frontiers and maintains a pristine environment, free from pollution. This isolation has also led to the development of unique biodiversity, with flora and fauna flourishing in the absence of large predators and dangerous wildlife.
The tropical climate, moderated by the surrounding ocean, provides warm weather year-round and diverse microclimates, making Mauritius a versatile travel destination. Every moment is a far-from-the-maddening-crowd experience. Yes, Mauritius is the best island.
4. EXCLUSIVE ECONOMIC ZONE
Mauritius isn’t just an island paradise—it’s a maritime powerhouse with a vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Thanks to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), Mauritius boasts an EEZ of 2.3 million square kilometers. This area is four times the size of France, making Mauritius the 20th largest EEZ globally. These sovereign rights allow Mauritius to explore, exploit, conserve, and manage marine and subsea resources, including fish, marine life, minerals, oil, and renewable energy sources.
In collaboration with Seychelles, Mauritius also manages the Saya de Malha Bank, an underwater plateau covering over 40,000 square kilometers. Home to one of the world’s largest seagrass meadows, it supports endangered species like sea turtles and dugongs and plays a crucial role in carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation. This area is vital for marine biology and oceanography research, focusing on sustainable resource use and environmental preservation. Strategically positioned to enhance its blue economy and marine technological capabilities, Mauritius is on a path to becoming a leader in global food security and one of the wealthiest islands. Every moment in Mauritius is a maritime experience. Yes, Mauritius is the best island.
3. SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL
The smallness of Mauritius offers significant benefits, enhancing both the quality of life and the island’s unique charm. With everything within a short distance, commuting, accessing services, and exploring places of interest is quick and convenient, boosting daily efficiency and productivity. The small area fosters a strong sense of community and social bonds, creating a supportive and friendly environment. Regular interactions and community events, like local festivals and markets, enhance this cohesion, promoting a sense of belonging.
Managing the environment is more feasible, ensuring clean and pristine surroundings, which is crucial for tourism and residents’ well-being. Quick implementation of conservation measures and sustainable practices maintains the island’s natural beauty. The compactness allows tourists to experience diverse attractions and activities without extensive travel, enhancing their overall experience and encouraging longer stays and repeat visits. Smaller areas are easier to monitor, providing a higher level of safety and security for residents and visitors. 8. EXCEPTIONALLY PURE WATER
Water is essential for life, and nothing can replace it, despite all our technological and scientific advancements. In Mauritius, water isn’t just abundant; it’s exceptionally pure. The low calcium levels in our soil produce naturally soft water, enriched with a good concentration of dissolved oxygen, ensuring every drop is refreshing and invigorating.
Mauritians often joke with our British friends that their fondness for tea and beer might stem from trying to mask the unpleasant taste of their tap water. In contrast, our local beers are praised for their balanced, subtle aromas.
Beer connoisseurs agree that it’s the purity of our water that allows these flavors to flourish, enhancing not just beverages but also our cuisine. Mauritius enjoys an average rainfall of 2,000mm annually, increasing to 4,000mm on the central plateau where the main reservoirs are located. Meanwhile, our warm beaches receive about 1,000mm of rainfall, much to the delight of sun seekers. Our reservoirs and aquifers have a combined capacity of over 150 million cubic meters, sufficient to meet our agricultural, industrial, and domestic needs. Every sip in Mauritius is a gourmet tasting experience. Yes, Mauritius is the best island.
7. CLEAN AIR: ITS A HUMAN RIGHT
Did you know that the World Health Organization considers clean air a fundamental human right? Yet, 99% of the global population breathes air that doesn’t meet WHO standards. Mauritius, however, is one of the rare exceptions where pristine air quality is a reality.
According to the 2023 IQAir report, only seven countries — New Zealand, Mauritius, Iceland, Grenada, Finland, Estonia, and Australia — meet the WHO guidelines for PM2.5, tiny particles harmful to health.
In Mauritius, this superior air quality is evident. From sunrise to sunset, the crystal-clear skies and vivid stars at night testify to this natural purity. Mauritius is more than a beautiful destination; it offers an invaluable and renewable natural resource — exceptionally clean air that cannot be replicated globally, even with the latest technology and financial resources. This superior air quality significantly enhances well-being, health, and life expectancy. In Mauritius, life expectancy is 70 years for men and 77 years for women, well above the global average. With around 7 million deaths annually attributed to air pollution, the health benefits of clean air in Mauritius are both vital and profound. Mauritius also features 24/7 screens across the island displaying real-time updates on air quality, further emphasizing its commitment to maintaining this precious resource. Every breath in Mauritius is a breathtaking experience. Yes, Mauritius is the best island.
